To comply with the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (Cal NAGPRA) and recent amendments in Assembly Bill 275 (Ramos, 2020), we have completed a draft Preliminary Inventory and Summary of the California Native American, archaeological, and ethnographic cultural items that are under SF State’s care. We value the input and expertise of California Native American Tribes and would like to invite Tribes to review and provide input on the draft document prior to submission to the Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC), which must occur by April 1, 2022.
The draft document, which is an Excel spreadsheet, can be downloaded using the link below and will be available for review from February 18 – March 18, 2022. Please note that this document has been password protected. All Tribes invited to review the spreadsheet have received a password in a letter sent from SF State. If you have not received a password and would like to request one, please contact SF State NAGPRA staff at nagpra@sfsu.edu.
We welcome your feedback and questions, which can be submitted via email, mail, or directly using the linked comment form. NAGPRA staff are also available to discuss the draft via phone, remote technology, or in person with appropriate COVID safety precautions.

Update: As of March 18, 2022, the draft spreadsheet has been removed from the website in order to allow NAGPRA staff time to incorporate feedback prior to NAHC submission. However, please note that consultation for the purpose of reviewing this document, providing more information, or engaging in the repatriation process is available to Tribes at any time, and a Tribe does not need to participate in review of the Document in order to engage in consultation at a later date.
